Individual Therapy to Feel Yourself Again

Individual therapy gives you a private, supportive space to understand what you’re going through, work through challenges, and build practical tools for everyday life. AFS Counseling Services offers online individual therapy across Illinois for teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, life transitions and more.

What Individual Therapy Looks Like

Individual therapy isn’t about being told what to do or being “fixed.” It’s a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together around the things that matter to you.

Your sessions may include talking through what you’re experiencing, identifying patterns, learning coping strategies, setting boundaries, or practicing new ways of responding to difficult situations. The approach depends on your goals, needs and comfort level.

A space to talk openly

You can talk about what’s happening without worrying about judgment or having to make everything sound okay.

Practical tools for real life

Therapy can give you strategies you can use between sessions—not just things to think about while you’re in the therapy room.

Support that's tailored to you

There isn’t one right way to do therapy. Your therapist will work with you to find an approach that fits your needs, goals and pace.

How Individual Therapy Can Help

You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. If something feels difficult, overwhelming, or simply not like you, we can work together to understand what's going on and find a way forward.

Anxiety

Learn to recognize anxious thought patterns, manage worry, and develop practical ways to feel more grounded.

Depression

Work through low mood, lack of motivation, disconnection, and the patterns that may be making everyday life feel harder.

Stress & burnout

Build healthier ways to manage pressure, set boundaries, and protect your time, energy and emotional well-being.

Self-esteem

Explore negative self-beliefs and develop a healthier, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Life transitions

Get support through changes in relationships, work, identity, family, or other periods when life doesn't feel quite as familiar.

Teen therapy

Give teens a supportive space to work through anxiety, academic pressure, relationships, emotions, and self-esteem concerns.

Our Approach to Individual Counseling

Good therapy starts with understanding—not assumptions.

At AFS Counseling Services, our individual counseling approach combines clinical expertise with genuine conversation and practical support. We draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, trauma-informed care and other therapeutic techniques based on what makes sense for you. The goal isn't to give you a list of things to "fix." It's to help you understand your experiences, recognize patterns, develop useful skills, and make changes that can carry into your everyday life.

Have Any Questions?

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is one-on-one counseling between you and a licensed therapist. It provides a private space to talk through challenges, understand patterns, develop coping skills and work toward goals that matter to you.

You don't need a specific diagnosis to benefit from individual counseling. People seek therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, self-esteem concerns, relationship or identity issues, life transitions and many other challenges.

Yes. AFS Counseling Services offers secure online individual therapy to people throughout Illinois. Our therapists are licensed in Illinois and can provide virtual sessions to clients located anywhere in the state.

You don't have to figure that out alone. You can review our therapists' specialties and approaches, then contact us if you'd like help deciding where to start.

Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what you'd like to work on, and what you hope to get from counseling. Your therapist will also explain how they work and begin developing a treatment approach with you.

The cost depends on your insurance coverage and whether you're using private pay. AFS Counseling Services accepts several major insurance plans and also offers private pay (our rates are $150 per 50 minutes session), sliding-scale options and superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.
