Asylum Clinical Evaluations

Have you experienced persecution, violence, threats, or other traumatic events in your home country or fear the same? At AFS Counseling Services, we provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed Asylum clinical evaluations that document your experiences. Our evaluation looks at current emotional well-being, trauma-related symptoms, and how the experiences may continue to affect your life.

What Is a Clinical Evaluation for Asylum Cases?

A clinical evaluation for asylum is a clinical assessment for individuals who suffered persecution or fear it in the future based on religion, race, nationality, political opinion, or membership to a particular group. It documents the psychological effects of experiences relevant to an asylum claim.

Note: The clinical evaluation provides clinical evidence. It does not determine whether you legally qualify for asylum.

Who Can Seek Asylum Clinical Evaluation?

An asylum clinical evaluation may be appropriate for individuals navigating asylum claims involving severe trauma, persecution, or safety concerns. Your immigration attorney can help determine whether a clinical evaluation is right for your specific case.

Persecution & Violence

Documenting trauma stemming from political, religious, or targeted persecution, physical or sexual violence, threats, torture, detention, or imprisonment.

Social Group & Identity Exploitation

Evaluating psychological distress for individuals targeted due to membership in a particular social group, including LGBTQ+ individuals, survivors of gender-based violence, or victims of non-state gang and cartel violence.

Fear of Return & Displacement

Assessing the mental health impact surrounding displacement, ongoing distress, and the genuine fear of returning to one's home country.

How an Asylum Evaluation Can Support Your Case

A clinical evaluation for an asylum case can help explain the mental and emotional effects of experiences that may be difficult to document through other evidence. For example, trauma may affect how a person, remembers or describes traumatic events, discusses painful experiences, responds emotionally during interviews, concentrates or recalls details, and experiences fear, anxiety, or distress when discussing the past.

How Does the Evaluation Work

Clinical Interview

Alice will discuss your background, trafficking experience, current symptoms, emotional well-being, and the ways the experience has affected your daily life.

Clinical Assessment

When clinically appropriate, assessment tools may be used to better understand trauma-related symptoms and current psychological functioning.

Clinical Analysis

The information is reviewed to identify relevant clinical findings and their connection to the experiences you describe.

Written evaluation

A formal immigration clinical evaluation is prepared with clinical findings relevant to your asylum case.

Have Any Questions?

Do I need a clinical evaluation for asylum?

Not every asylum applicant needs one. An evaluation may be useful when clinical evidence can help document trauma, psychological symptoms, difficulty discussing past experiences, or the effects of persecution.

It can provide supporting clinical evidence and explain the psychological effects of experiences described in your case. It does not guarantee asylum approval or determine legal eligibility.

It can document clinically relevant effects of trauma that may affect memory, concentration, emotional expression, or the ability to discuss traumatic experiences. It does not make a legal credibility determination.

An immigration clinical evaluation should be conducted by an appropriately licensed and qualified mental health professional with relevant experience. At AFS Counseling Services, asylum evaluations are provided by Alice Solis, LCPC, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with experience in immigration evaluations.

Yes. When clinically appropriate, the evaluation can assess and document trauma-related symptoms and mental health concerns such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

If you prefer to complete your evaluation in Spanish, contact AFS Counseling Services when scheduling so current Spanish-language availability can be confirmed.

Alice reviews the information gathered during the evaluation and prepares the written report. The report is then provided securely according to the arrangements made with you and, when applicable, your attorney.
